- We track gold and silver Eagle sales on a daily basis at the US Mint
- The recent surge in gold Eagle sales in unprecedented (our daily records covering 2012)
- What is even more puzzling: “uncirculated” gold Eagles are sold out at the Mint (but, of course, available at many coin dealers for around $1,800). Nevertheless, a quarter billion dollars was spent on “proof” quality gold Eagles from the Mint at prices around $2,000, or 10% premium. Sure, you get a gift box, and the high-gloss looks nice. But how many gift boxes do you need, when you are, apparently, ordering in bulk?
- Maybe the 1 oz “proof” quality version is rumored to be sold out soon (the 1/2 ounce is already sold out), triggering some “last chance” panic shopping. Still, we are puzzled about this sudden burst.
- Retail investors usually prefer silver due to its lower absolute price, so we are reluctant to write this phenomenon off as lack of knowledge.
